Google Workers Revolt over Israel Deal
Exclusive: Two workers resign amid fears Google's cloud and AI technology could be used in Israel's war in Gaza
It’s a short email from me today, just to point you toward my latest piece in TIME. This one’s about the growing number of Google employees protesting against a deal to provide the Israeli government and military with AI and cloud computing services.
In short: my piece reveals that two Google workers have recently resigned in protest against the deal, and another was fired in what he claims was an attempt to cause a chilling effect. Two workers for DeepMind, Google’s AI lab, also tell me they are worried DeepMind’s ability to prevent its AI tools being used for military purposes by Google customers has been eroded following a restructure last year.
There’s much more in the full piece, which you can read here:
(Google says its work with Israel is “not directed at highly sensitive or classified military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services,” and said the fired worker was terminated for violating company policy.)
